From the first page of the Bantam edition, 1st printing:
'The goodbye look... Lew Archer had seen it many times. It was an odd look - one that settled on men's faces when they knew they were going to die...and wanted to.
Archer first saw it during the war, and too many times since. Now it was all around him again. And he was in a middle of a mystery that had its roots in a trio of ghosts and a handful of carefully guarded secrets. If he didn't solve it, he'd see the goodbye look again...on the face of the next murder victim.'

Trivia:
The famous quote from William Goldman's front page review in the New York Times Book Review, which was reprinted on Millars subsequent Bantam paperbacks, actually said 'the finest series of detective novels ever written by an American.' But the review itself was headlined 'The finest detective novels ever written by an American.'
